English Access Microscholarship Program

The English Access Microscholarship Program is run at Walmer High school by The English Training Institute and is funded by The Regional English Language Office of the United States Embassy.
At present, 20 Grade 11 and 40 Grade 10 learners are enrolled in the English Access Microscholarship Program at Walmer High School, instructed by Cathy Holdsworth and Emma White. This is a 2 year program, which runs two afternoons a week during the school term and occasionally on Saturdays and in the holidays. It is primarily a language enrichment program that looks at improving the learners’ language skills whilst engaging them in a variety of classes that build confidence, enhance general knowledge, expand life skills, and empower them to make realistic, informed choices in their lives.
The program also takes each group on an end of year camp and on a number of day trip excursions during the term. These are all aimed at broadening the students’ horizons whilst they work towards having a better command of the English language. In addition, various speakers from the private sector are brought in to introduce topics such as the art of entrepreneurship to the learners.
During the four years that the program has been running at Walmer High School, three Access learners have been privileged to travel to the United States for the Bold Leaders Program. In addition, some groups have completed Level 1 first aid courses while others have developed their public speaking skills by being videoed and then critically watching their own performances.
The program is designed to instill a respect for the value of education and to make the learners strive to be the very best that they can be by taking ownership of their learning process and excelling in the international language of English.
